A voice raised on folk songs
Ceren Bozkurt grew up in a family with a strong folk-song tradition, with the sound of the bağlama at home. As a child she taught herself first the bağlama, then the guitar.
At the conservatory she met the cello, completed a degree in music education and finished her master’s in Germany. Today she performs as a musician in theatre productions; in her own projects she interprets Anatolian melodies in a contemporary language.
Her formal training began in the classical department of a state conservatory, where she first met the cello, the main instrument of her academic path. She studied with teachers from the Russian, Azerbaijani and Turkish schools, attending a fine-arts high school in parallel.
Alongside the cello she taught herself the duduk and the kabak kemane. Since 2021 she has worked as a theatre musician in Germany, weaving the musical texture of productions with cello, traditional instruments and percussion. She has worked at Maxim Gorki Theater and Theater Osnabrück, and currently performs with Theater Bonn, Thalia Theater Hamburg and Schauspiel Essen.
In her own concert projects she returns to the bağlama melodies of her childhood, bringing Anatolian music together with the sounds of today.
